This book was filled with even more emotionally sensitive moments than the previous one. With Ani and Nik actually performing the traditional mummification of Ahmose, there were so many feelings that both characters had, and in turn, that I had. Nik's grief is consistently heartbreaking, and his feelings of anger toward Ahmose are front and center. I wonder if he will move through any more stages of grief in the next book, which will help bring this trilogy of the story arc to a close.

Stronger together! Ani is performing Ahmose’s mummification with Nik’s assistance. Stress and anger build from being put in a situation full of political and relationship landmines that Nik and Ani must navigate carefully. There is resentment and anger in the temples. Without Ahmose for the target, it flows to Nik. This story is a blend of old and modern worlds wrapped around Egyptian mythology. I enjoy this series. The characters are interesting, and the temple rituals are fascinating.

Mask of the Devoted absolutely steamrolled my heart, reversed over the emotional wreckage, and then lovingly taped the pieces back together with glittery washi tape and Egyptian magic. Laura looked at grief and said, “Let’s feel this in stereo,” and I??? I felt it.. The anger, and the frustration, and the hurt and the... ugh it was so good. The way that she writes how grief messes with interpersonal relationships... I was a soggy emotional puddle
