About this ebook

Discover an urban fantasy based on Egyptian mythology and set in an alternative version of modern London where the Egyptian Empire took the place of the Romance Empire. Follow Ani, a trainee priestess in the temple of Anubis, as she learns about mummification, the rites of the dead, and temple politics alongside her jackal familiar and the High Priest's son, Nik.

Mummification lessons, a new jackal familiar, and temple politics...Ani never expected serving Anubis to be this complicated.

When Ani becomes the first apprentice to be Blessed by Anubis in years, she finds herself thrown into a world she only ever hoped to be part of.

Between learning how to be an embalmer, being the new owner of a sacred jackal, and a budding rivalry turned friendship with the High Priest's son, Ani has her hands full.

But when she uncovers a plot that could bring the temple to its knees, she has to decide whether to risk her place at the temple, or let the injustice slide by unnoticed.

Can she stop the plot before it's too late?

As a lover of all things Egyptian and mythological, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. There’s just enough detail to introduce us to the world and its characters without being weighed down with the minutia. I’m already in love with Ani and Matia, and can’t wait to see what the discoveries of this book mean for her future and that of Anubis’ priesthood. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Booksprout.

Maybe it's because I'm older, but I found this to be extremely YA and rather bland and lacking in substance or character development. While I love Egyptian mythology and was intrigued by the blurb, the plot and its execution didn't suck me in or progress smoothly. The characters and depth of emotion didn't move me. I was left with no interest in continuing the series. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ani dreams of being a priestess for Anubis. Not only is she chosen but she is Blessed by Anubis to become an apprentice with her sacred jackal Matia and taught to prepare the dead for their trip to Duat. Her friendships and alliances become important when she discovers a conspiracy in the temple. The plot weaves past and present together to create a new view of the world. It makes a fascinating story where the fantasy characters' lives are believable. This is a good series starter.
