In questo racconto di ispirazione gotica e noir, ambientato nell'Italia dell'Ottocento, il narratore è un uomo che sostiene di aver vissuto molteplici vite, alcune che ricorda, altre che ignora totalmente. Tutte però lo hanno condotto nello stesso luogo misterioso: un vecchio castello gotico, nel mezzo della campagna, dove vive una dama bellissima e sola che aspetta da sempre il ritorno del suo innamorato. Igino Ugo Tarchetti, (1839 – 1869) è stato uno scrittore, poeta e giornalista italiano. Anticonformista e tendente alla malinconia e alle fantasie macabre, fu uno dei più importanti esponenti del movimento letterario della Scapigliatura milanese e scrisse diverse opere tra romanzi, racconti e poesie. Il suo romanzo più celebre fu "Fosca" (1869): ispirato largamente a fatti autobiografici, venne pubblicato postumo e terminato dallo scrittore e amico Salvatore Farina.
