Der italienische Philosoph Giordano Bruno (1548 bis 1600) lehrte, dass alles Sein beseelt ist, dass das Universum unendlich ist, und dass Gott in und über allem ist. Seine Erkenntnislehre fordert, als ganzer Mensch zu erkennen und zu forschen, mit den Sinnen, den Emotionen, der Phantasie, dem Denken und dem Bewusstsein. Wer forscht soll nur der Wahrheit verpflichtet sein und nicht für Geld und Karriere wohlfeile Ergebnisse liefern. Für dieses Denken wurde er von der katholischen Kirche am 17. Februar 1600 auf dem Camp d'Fiori auf dem Scheiterhaufen verbrannt.
