La fortuna del medico scozzese Arthur Conan Doyle (Edimburgo, 1859 – Crowborough, 1930) è indissolubilmente legata al personaggio di Sherlock Holmes, il detective più celebre del mondo, campione indiscusso del cosiddetto “metodo deduttivo”, e a quello del suo inseparabile compagno di indagini, il dottor Watson, protagonisti non solo di diversi suoi romanzi e racconti, ma di numerose, popolarissime trasposizioni cinematografiche e televisive. Conan Doyle, del resto, è scrittore di razza, e un vero maestro dell’intreccio, tanto nei romanzi più lunghi, come “Uno studio in rosso” (1887) e “Il mastino dei Baskerville” (1902), quanto nei racconti, capaci anch’essi di tenere avvinti i lettori fino all’ultimo respiro. Tra questi, spiccano senza dubbio quelli raccolti ne “Le avventure di Sherlock Holmes” (1892), di cui i tre qui riuniti, che proponiamo in nuova traduzione, fanno parte: “Uno scandalo in Boemia”, “L’avventura del pollice dell’ingegnere” e “L’avventura dei Faggi Rossi”.
