About this ebook

Consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his colleague Doctor John Watson return in His Last Bow, the second-last Sherlock Holmes anthology published by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The adventures featured in this collection were written in the years before the First World War, except for the last story, “His Last Bow,” which details Holmes’ own experience during the conflict.

Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories have been adapted numerous times, including the 2009 and 2011 movies starring Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr., and the popular television shows Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, and the BBC’s Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

The second part of this book is a return to Holmes’ best kind of mysteries, which was a happy surprise considering Conan Doyle had been tired of Holmes for a while by the time he wrote them, and that his tiredness had shown in a few of the Sherlock Holmes' stories that preceded those in this book. It also provides a fitting Last Bow for the detective, as Conan Doyle tries to get rid of him yet again. I'm a bit tempted to not read the last book at all, since this one would be a strong finish, considering it includes several very good, intriguing and complex mysteries, it sees the return of familiar characters, such as Mycroft, and is topped by that fitting Last Bow.
