Honore de Balzac (1799-1850) was a French novelist and playwright. He is best known for his novel sequence La Comédie Humaine (The Human Comedy), which comprises over 90 novels and stories. Balzac was born in Tours, France, and studied law at the Sorbonne. He began his writing career as a playwright, and his first play, Cromwell, was a success.
