I was forced to read this book for a school project, and didn't have high expectations for it. I had seen some of his other novels like The Way of Kings from a distance, and started mistborn, but they had just seemed to big to be able to catch my attention (For the record, the first copy of mistborn i tried to read was the shorter book with more pages), especially with my ADHD. However, once I started reading this, I was hooked, both on this book and then more of Sanderson. The story was great, the world was a cool idea of a parallel universe USA (or I guess UIA), but the magic system was what blew me away. I had never seen something organized in such a way that was so entertaining, my imagination went wild. Once I finished it, I was a little put out that their wasn't a sequel and probably wouldn't be for a long time, but that lead me to get into his bigger novels and Cosmere stuff. Honestly, a nice quick read, with the (possible) promise of more to come.

It took me a little bit to get into this book. A little longer than normal for a Brandon Sanderson novel. The "magic" system didn't grab me at first. But once it clicked in my head and I understood it, I loved it. As always the characters are great and the shinning point of the book. They are fleshed out and a joy to read. I loved the world and the idea of it being a "gear punk" story, but I don't think the full potential was reached for either of those. Overall a fantastic mystery

The first thing I found myself asking was if this was a manuscript that Mr Sanderson wrote in high school or college that was dug up and published because of his previous successful books to cash in on those like myself that found him due to the WOT series. Since finishing the Jordan series I have read every book written my Mr. Sanderson I do not think I have missed one, this one being the last one I could find. I am and remain a big fan and this book did get better towards the end, look forward to more
