The director's cut of Ridley Scot's Kingdom of Heaven is my favorite movie. Whenever I see the film, I always feel the need to dust this book off and scan through it again. This is the best, most researched and unbiased account of the Third Crusade and what led up to it. Sala ad-Din is still one of my heroes, and while that might get me fried in today's world, take a look at the man's character. I think a few more of his type could be needed.

James Reston, Jr. is a journalist and the author of more than a dozen books, including The Last Apocalypse, Dogs of God, and Galileo: A Life. He lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
