About this ebook

A Riveting Insider's Account of Life on the Road with the Grateful Dead

Steve Parish's Home Before Daylight is the untold story of life on the road with the Grateful Dead, written by an insider who lived it from the early days to today. Parish's journey began in 1968 when he was busted for selling acid and landed in Riker's Island. After his release, he started working as a roadie for the Grateful Dead in 1969 and quickly fell in with a band of likeminded misfits who formed the nucleus of what would be the greatest road crew in rock 'n' roll history.

As Parish traveled to California and began his apprenticeship with the Dead, he forged unbreakable bonds with Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Billy and Mickey. He became especially close with Garcia, acting as his personal roadie and later manager for his solo performances and Garcia Band shows. Parish was there during times of trouble, spent hours by Garcia's bedside when he was in a coma, and performed the duties of best man at his wedding.

Throughout the Dead's historic run, there were parties of biblical proportion and celebrity run-ins with everybody from Bob Dylan to Frank Sinatra. But there was also a dark side to life on the road, and tragedy didn't just strike the musicians. Seen through Parish's eyes and experiences, Home Before Daylight is a revealing look at The Grateful Dead's wild ride, reflecting the American spirit of adventure and brotherhood in this unforgettable piece of music history.

At first, entree' to the backstage life of the Dead is a bit arresting: we all have an idea of the machinations of rock and roll-but a first hand account can still leave you momentarily shocked. As a long time deadhead, Big Steve's insider perspective added fantastic color to the story of the band that means so much to me. Personalities come alive as the daily lives of the GD family come into view in a new way. While perhaps not ideal for the layperson-for the deadhead I heartily recommend this read!

A very good read. Steve gives us a glimpse of the inner workings of the Dead and their crew. Written by the man who spent so much time with Jerry.

Steve Parish is a valued perspective from as far inside the Grateful Dead scene as you can possibly see.
