About the author

Allan Mitchell received his doctorate from Harvard in 1961 before joining the faculty at Smith College and then the University of California, San Diego. Among his recent publications are The Great Train Race, Railways and the Franco-German Rivalry, 1815-1914 (2000) and Nazi Paris: The History of an Occupation, 1940-1944 (2008). He currently lives in Colorado.
