Miss Rose Waterstone might be a romantic, but she knows better than to believe romance can happen to her. True love and magical wishes are all well and good in poetry, but there's no place for it in her real life—not when the fate of her destitute family depends on her marrying well.

Time is not on her side, and fortune has never been in her favor. Which is why she's shocked out of her wits to discover the book of poetry she'd wished for at the maypole in the most unusual of places. And when she finds a love letter inside that seems to be written for her? Well, maybe true love has found her at last. Then again...maybe not.

When the intimidating Viscount of Thornton tracks her down and accuses her of intercepting a hidden message he'd been sent to recoup for the crown, it becomes very clear indeed that she's made a mistake. Romance is not in the cards for her.

But though her mishap leads to mistaken identities and a whole world of misunderstandings, it also finds her working side by side with the scowling viscount as they track down the hidden message. In the process, she discovers that the viscount isn't nearly so terrifying when he's knee-deep in a duck pond, and true love...?
