I feel this book is very good to use as a beginner. I was able to not only make games, but play around with the games, like converting the D&D functions to GML and following the book's "after game" stuff. Perfect for someone who wants to start off and get an understanding on how to use GameMaker. One issue however. as of this review, the book is highly outdated. I highly suggest using GameMaker 8.1 than GameMaker: Studio. There are ALOT of legacy code (ex: highscore, sleep, etc.) that GameMaker: Studio does NOT support (as they have their reasons). [if file_exist(GameMaker8.1.exe) star=5 else star=4]
