About this ebook

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Named one of Entertainment Tonight’s Best Celebrity Memoirs of 2023
As seen in The New York Times, People, The Cut, Vulture, The Daily Beast, Today, Bustle, Us Weekly, Life & Style, and Interview

“No stone goes unturned” (People) in this memoir about The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Heather Gay’s departure from the Mormon Church, and her unforeseen success in business, television, and single motherhood.

Straight off the slopes and into the spotlight, Heather Gay is famous for speaking the gospel truth. Whether as a businesswoman, mother, or television personality, she is unafraid to blaze a new trail, even if it means losing family, friends, and her community.

Born and bred to be devout, Heather based her life around her faith. She attended Brigham Young University, served a mission in France, and married into Mormon royalty in the temple. But her life as a good Mormon abruptly ended when she lost the marriage and faith that she had once believed would last forever.

With writing that is beautiful, sad, funny, and true, Heather recounts the difficult discovery of the darkness and damage that often exists behind a picture-perfect life, while examining the nuanced relationship between duty to self and duty to God. “An eye-opening firsthand account of religious indoctrination told with candor and sincerity” (Interview magazine), Bad Mormon is an unfiltered look at the religion that broke her heart.

This book is unremarkable in it's negative and unforgiving view on life. I've read many other stories by "born and bred" Mormon apostates who lost their faith in their church teachings and community upon experiencing some type of psycho-spiritual devastation. In contrast I have known hundreds of Mormons who have suffered emotional and spiritual trauma and have maintained their faith in "Christ and Christian principles", and who have stayed in the LDS Church as morally strong men and women. Those who become apostate and write books, articles or post via You Tube - garner the sympathetic tropes of disingenuous actors with ulterior motives. They don't love you, they just want you to become a miserable hater who acts out her rage and humiliation instead of healing through forgiveness and love. It's not about being a "Bad Mormon", it's about being a "Good Person", working out a spiritual resolution toward happiness. You should have instead written about how to be a "Good Person", who conquered suffering and returned to the pure love of Christ. Turning to radical feminism and denying your children a decent father is a common downfall of the worldly ways, something which Christ speaks against. Using a weak husband as an excuse for promiscuity doesn't work well on judgement day either. This behavior is not love for humanity (as Christ loves humanity) or for yourself and there is no shortage of miserable people in the world to encourage you to act out your resentments. Everyone is individually assessed for their moral fortitude. And being successful in this life doesn't always equate with salvation. So, instead of blaming your ex-husband and your church leaders maybe you should take an honest approach to your own moral collapse and humble yourself before God in tearful prayer. Focus on your salvation instead of being a bad Mormon. I wish you the best!

Heather Gay is a remarkable person and a light for those of us on the other side of a cult. I loved learning all about Heather, her struggles and successes!! I loved her before this book and after the book I am head over heels in love with Heather. If you have escaped mormon-ism I would highly recommend this book. Hell if you've never set foot in a Mormon church you should still read it and learn a thing or two while getting to know an angel!!

I absolutely loved this book! It absolutely encompass a range of emotions and keeps the reader intrigued. There are so many funny moments that are relatable to everyone. I do feel that she should have gone into more depth about her spiritual shift and where she stands with her current beliefs... Maybe she's saving that for the next book! And I was disappointed that it wasn't longer!! Highly recommend! Those that only give 1 star are probably moles from the church (afterall, the LDS church is suing her over this book... Which tells you a lot about their fear based practice and using their members tithes to try and shut down someones truth... But I digress) But the book and enjoy the great read!!
