About this ebook

Published in 1845, Emily Bronte’s gothic novel set on the windy moors of Yorkshire is the story of the doomed love between Catherine Earnshaw and her father’s adopted son, Heathcliff. The book was initially poorly received by many critics who found its dark, tragic story needlessly harsh and disturbing. That opinion has not endured, and the only novel Emily Bronte published is now considered to be one of the great classics of English literature.

This is by far one of the worst books I ever read, I tried so hard to finish this book but boy was it so difficult, Joseph's English gave me a headache everytime I reached his part..only good part for me was trying to know what really happened to at the end..how can you say you love someone so deeply, feel your the only one that can love them more than anyone and not allow them get peace when they are alive..some fights are better off left alone..

I compare this to Anna Karenina in terms of difficulty, character development, darkness, originality, and pace. I had a hard time getting engaged for the first 100 pages or so. Normally that means I won't get engaged at all. This proved an exception, and I read the last half in one sitting. My sleep suffered, but I stayed entranced. Joseph has dialog that is almost impossible to understand. Luckily his part wasn't particularly big.

The book is written in an interesting way, almost all of it is told through an exhausting recount of one side character. The main love story though, is so shallow and childish. I don't understand how other reviewers can say it's deep and root for Heathcliff. That's all you can expect from wealthy families so isolated they have to pretend to fall in love with each other and stubbornly continue drama and feuds just to pass the time.

About the author

Sister of literary lions Charlotte and Anne, Emily Bronte published Wuthering Heights, her only novel, a year before she died. By all accounts Emily was a brilliant but sensitive and shy young woman who maintained intimate friendships with very few people beyond her immediate family. Although some evidence suggests that she may have been working on a second novel at the time of her death at age 30 in 1848, no manuscript has been found.
