Il a été mis en chantier après que Barbusse, ayant rencontré Staline, a proposé à celui-ci l'idée d'un tel travail ; le chef politique donne alors à l'écrivain libre accès aux archives soviétiques, et lui adjoint même son secrétaire Kaganovitch pour l'aider dans ses recherches. L'ouvrage paraît en mars 1935 : Barbusse y dépeint l'URSS comme une force en marche. Plus que la biographie d'un homme c'est celle du pouvoir communiste.
