‘ಅಸ್ಪೃಶ್ಯ’ ಅಂದರೆ, ‘ಮುಟ್ಟಬಾರದ’ ಎಂಬುದು ರೂಢಿಗತ ಅರ್ಥ; ‘ಮುಟ್ಟಲಾಗದ’ ಎಂದೂ ಅದನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥೈಸಬಹುದು. ಈ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥದ ಅಸ್ಪೃಶ್ಯತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕುರಿತದ್ದು ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ವೈದೇಹಿಯವರ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾತಿಜಾತಿಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಅಸ್ಪೃಶ್ಯತೆಯ ಕಥೆಯೂ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಜತೆಗೆ, ಒಂದೇ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಒಂದೇ ಕುಟುಂಬದೊಳಗಿನ ಹಲವಾರು ಅಸ್ಪೃಶ್ಯತೆಯ ಸ್ತರಗಳನ್ನೂ ಕೂಡ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯು ಅನಾವರಣ ಮಾಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ, ಕುಂದಾಪುರ ಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದ ಕಾಲ್ಪನಿಕ ಕಿರುಕುಟುಂಬವೊಂದರ ಈ ಕಥೆಯು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳಿಗೆ ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಹೋಗುವ ಒಂದು ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದ ಕಥನವೂ ಹೌದು; ಮತ್ತು, ಅದು ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಮೀರಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ಒಂದು ಸಾರ್ವತ್ರಿಕ ಮಾನವ ಕಥನವೂ ಹೌದು. ಸಣ್ಣಸಣ್ಣ ವಿವರಗಳ ಮೂಲಕವೇ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಹೋಗುವ ಈ ಕಥನಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಹರಹಿನ ಜತೆಗೆ ಕಾವ್ಯದ ವ್ಯಂಜಕತೆಯೂ ಇದೆಯಾದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುವ ಸಂಸಾರಚಿತ್ರವು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ದೇಶಕಾಲದ ಒಂದು ಕುಟುಂಬಕಥನವಾಗುವ ಜತೆಗೇ ವಿಶಾಲ ಸಂಸಾರದ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯೂ ಆಗುವ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದೆ.

Janaki Srinivasa Murthy (ಜಾನಕಿ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ ಮೂರ್ತಿ) (born as Vasanti on 12 February 1945), popularly known by her nickname Vaidehi (ವೈದೇಹಿ) is an Indian writer and well-known writer of modern Kannada language fiction. Vaidehi is one of the most successful women writers in the language and a recipient of prestigious national and state-level literary awards. She has won the Sahitya Akademi Award for her collection of short stories, Krauncha Pakshigalu in 2009.
