‘‘यहाँ कोई भेड़ नहीं है; मैं तुमसे कहता हूँ।’’ वाल्डो चिल्लाया।
‘‘मैंने तुमको सिर्फ कहते सुना है।’’ बर्टी ने बिस्तर के अधिकतर कपड़े जमीन पर फेंकते हुए कहा; ‘‘अगर तुम कुछ छिपा नहीं रहे होते तो तुम इतने उोजित नहीं होते।’’
इस समय तक वाल्डो समझ चुका था कि वैन ताह्न पागलों जैसा बरताव कर रहा है और फिर वह उससे ठिठोली करने लगा।
