Daher hat Thackeray auch sein feines Gespür für alle Formen der Angeberei und Hochstapelei gesellschaftlicher Aufsteiger. Allerdings bewies Thackeray durch seine Unfähigkeit, mit Geld umzugehen, auch die "unbedingte Eleganz" eines englischen Gentleman: Kaum volljährig hatte der in Kalkutta geborene Sohn eines Kolonialbeamten bereits sein ganzes beträchtliches Erbe vergeudet.
