Tra i tantissimi ammiratori di Joe R. Lansdale esiste uno «zoccolo duro» che, pur amando tutta la produzione del grande texano, ha sempre avuto un debole per la serie di romanzi che hanno per protagonisti Hap (bianco, liberal e donnaiolo) e Leonard (nero, conservatore e gay). Da Una stagione selvaggia a Sotto un cielo cremisi, i due detective dai metodi a volte spicci ma dall'etica (a loro modo) immacolata sono passati per ogni sorta di avventura, uscendone spesso malconci, sempre ilari e innamorati della loro vita e del loro mondo. La stessa cosa che accade in queste tre novelle: Le iene, Veil in visita e Una mira perfetta. Altrettanti gioielli, nei quali Hap e Leonard devono vedersela con una banda di rapinatori senza scrupoli, con la Dixie Mafia, con gli spacciatori di crack. E con la legge, sempre meno propensa a tollerare che i casi loro assegnati finiscano regolarmente in una ridda di liti, scazzottate, sparatorie.
