關於這本電子書

Zadig (1741), subtitled Zadig, or The Book of Fate, belongs to the tradition of philosophical tales, although its Persian setting and fable-like tone lend it a deceptive lightness. Structured as a series of episodic misadventures, the story follows Zadig, a wise Babylonian nobleman whose rationality, moral integrity, and scientific curiosity repeatedly bring him into conflict with fortune and power. With each turn of events—whether being punished for speaking truthfully, exiled for loving too wisely, or rewarded only to be brought low again—Voltaire presents a cosmos indifferent to virtue, where the best intentions often reap misfortune. The tale reads as a parody of the Bildungsroman: Zadig learns not through revelation but by enduring the absurdity of the human and divine order. Each chapter contains a satirical kernel—whether mocking religious intolerance, arbitrary justice, or political opportunism—while gesturing at the instability of any fixed moral system.

This modern Critical Reader’s Edition includes an illuminating afterword tracing Voltaire’s intellectual relationships with Enlightenment thinkers and philosophers (including Locke, Diderot, Rousseau and Newton), containing unique research into his influences and economic attachments, a comprehensive timeline of his life and works, a glossary of Enlightenment terminology, and a detailed index of all of Voltaire’s writings. This unique professional translation renders Voltaire’s sharp, satirical prose into modern language to preserve the original clarity and movement of the text. Combined with the scholarly amplifying material, this edition is a groundbreaking exploration of Voltaire’s classic works and his enduring artistic and philosophical influence, and influence on modern Protestant-Atheistic Theology.

First published anonymously in 1747, though likely written several years earlier and completed around 1741, Zadig was issued in Geneva and later republished in Paris. It appeared in the wake of Voltaire’s theatrical successes and just before his deeper immersion into historical and scientific writing. The novella’s exotic setting allowed Voltaire to explore controversial themes under the protective veil of orientalism. Babylonian kings and Zoroastrian priests are proxies for the monarchs and clerics of Voltaire’s France, and their whims appear all the more ridiculous for being presented in distant garb. This distance gave Voltaire the freedom to criticize without immediate reprisal, though the work was well understood by contemporaries as an attack on social injustice, judicial cruelty, and theological despotism. The tale’s combination of clarity, brevity, and ironic detachment made it widely read, and it became one of the most translated of Voltaire’s shorter works during his lifetime.

關於作者

Voltaire (1694-1778), born François-Marie Arouet, was a towering figure in the European Enlightenment, renowned for his wit, satirical genius, and fierce advocacy of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and free trade. Born on November 21, 1694, in Paris, Voltaire was educated by the Jesuits at the Collège Louis-le-Grand, where he demonstrated an early talent in literature and theater. Despite a brief stint studying law, he devoted himself to writing, rapidly gaining fame for his sharp wit and eloquence. Voltaire's literary career was marked by numerous conflicts with French authorities, leading to periods of imprisonment and exile. His most famous stay at the Bastille prison was due to his satirical verse, which mocked the French Regent. This propensity for critique often saw him in conflict with the establishment, but it also earned him a reputation as a champion of the oppressed and a critic of religious and political dogma, including the Atheistic dogmatism of the French Revolution.
