About this ebook

Biodegradable Metals and Their Medical Applications presents an authoritative overview of all aspects of biodegradable metals and their biomedical applications from the definition, criteria, classification and alloying design of biodegradable metals to the mechanical property optimization, degradation control, biological effect, surface treatment, and advanced manufacture technologies of various biodegradable alloying systems. In vitro and in vivo biocompatibility evaluations for each kind of degradable metallic biomaterials are also discussed, and medical devices designed for usage within bone, blood, and other body microenvironments are presented, making this a complete resource for researchers in the fields of materials science and biomedical engineering. - Provides updated knowledge on the alloying design and microstructure-property relationship of biodegradable metals - Features state-of-the-art research and development status of various medical devices comprising biodegradable metals - Reviews mechanical, chemical, and biological interactions between the biodegradable metals and the host, and their spatiotemporal precise bioadapatibility

About the author

Dr. Yufeng Zheng is a Professor of Biomaterials at the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Peking University, China. He received his BSc (1993) degree in Metallic materials and Heat Treatment at the Harbin Engineering University and PhD (1998) degree in Materials Science at the Harbin Institute of Technology, China. His research interests include the development of new kinds of metallic biomaterials (biodegradable metals including Mg alloys, Fe alloys and Zn alloys, Bulk metallic glass, etc.), surface modification of metallic biomaterials, development of interventional therapy and minimal invasive therapy devices (stent, occlude, etc.), and optimal design and evaluation of biomedical devices using finite element analysis. Dr. Zheng is the principal investigators of over 50 projects, owner of several Chinese invention patents, and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in prominent Journals. He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Bioactive Materials (KeAi), Editor of Materials Letters (Elsevier), and Vice Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Materials Science & Technology (Elsevier).
