About this ebook

The meeting on harmonizing diagnostic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedures for skin-related neglected tropical diseases (skin NTDs) took place in Madrid, Spain, on July 8–10, following the recommendations of the fifth LABNET meeting held at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research at the University of Ghana in Accra in October 2023.
The primary objectives of the meeting were to present and validate standard operating procedures, provide updates on PCR tests, discuss the implementation of external quality assessment (EQA) panels and plan the harmonization of procedures, including training laboratory staff. Over the three days, attendees heard statements from network partners, reviewed progress reports on harmonization procedures from various disease-specific experts and discussed types of EQA panels for enhanced skin NTD programmes. Key goals included implementing harmonized procedures, building capacity in laboratories, strengthening collaboration between member laboratories and national NTD programmes, and formulating recommendations and actions for 2024 and beyond.
