‘विकासवाद का सिद्धांत’ के लिए संपूर्ण विश्व में ख्यात चार्ल्स डार्विन दुनिया के श्रेष्ठतम वैज्ञानिकों में से एक थे। बचपन से ही प्राकृतिक वस्तुओं में रुचि रखनेवाले चार्ल्स ने पाँच वर्ष समुद्री यात्रा में बिताए और जगह-जगह की पत्तियाँ; लकड़ियाँ; पत्थर; कीड़े-मकोड़े व अन्य जीव तथा हड्डियाँ एकत्रित कीं।
उन्होंने अपना शोध कार्य ग्रामीण इलाके के दूर-दराज स्थित एक मकान में आरंभ किया था। तभी से उनके मस्तिष्क में ‘जीवोत्पत्ति का सिद्धांत’ जन्म ले चुका था। सन् 1844 में उन्होंने उसे विस्तार से कलमबद्ध भी कर लिया। वे लगातार प्रयोग-दर-प्रयोग करके अपने सिद्धांत को प्रामाणिक बनाते चले गए।
डार्विन ने जीवन के हर पहलू पर प्रयोग किए। उन्होंने पत्तों; फूलों; पक्षियों; स्तनपायी जीवों—सभी को अपने प्रयोगों के दायरे में लिया। विभिन्न प्रकार के मांसाहारी पौधों से संसार को अवगत करानेवाले डार्विन ने निरीह केंचुओं के व्यापक योगदान पर भी प्रकाश डाला। वे अपने सिद्धांतों को अनेक दृष्टिकोणों; तथ्यों व तरीकों से परखते थे। उनका संपूर्ण जीवन प्रयोगों में ही बीता। संसार को ‘विकासवाद’ का प्रसिद्ध सिद्धांत इन्हीं प्रयोगों की देन है।
