प्रेमचंद आधुनिक हिंदी साहित्य के कालजयी कथाकार हैं। कथा-कुल की सभी विधाओं—कहानी, उपन्यास, लघुकथा आदि सभी में उन्होंने लिखा और अपनी लगभग पैंतीस वर्ष की साहित्य-साधना तथा लगभग चौदह उपन्यासों एवं तीन सौ कहानियों की रचना करके ‘प्रेमचंद युग’ के रूप में स्वीकृत होकर सदैव के लिए अमर हो गए।
उपन्यासकार के रूप में प्रेमचंद का महान् योगदान है। उन्होंने हिंदी उपन्यास को भारतीय मुहावरा दिया और उसे समाज और संस्कृति से जोड़ा तथा साधारण व्यक्ति को नायक बनाकर नया आदर्श प्रस्तुत किया। उन्होंने हिंदी भाषा को मानक रूप दिया और देश-विदेश में हिंदी उपन्यास को भारतीय रूप देकर सदैव के लिए अमर बना दिया।

जन्म : हिंदी कथा साहित्य में जीवन का अध्ययन करनेवाले मुंशी प्रेमचंद का जन्म सन् 1880 में बनारस के ‘लमही’ नामक गाँव के एक किसान परिवार में हुआ। रचना-संसार : ‘इसरारे मुहब्बत’, ‘प्रताप चंद्र’, ‘श्यामा’, ‘प्रेमा’, ‘कृष्णा’, ‘वरदान’, ‘प्रतिज्ञा’, ‘सेवासदन’, ‘प्रेमाश्रम’, ‘निर्मला’, ‘रंगभूमि’, ‘कायाकल्प’, ‘गबन’, ‘कर्मभूमि’, ‘गोदान’, ‘मंगलसूत्र’ (अपूर्ण) (उपन्यास)। ‘सोजे वतन’, ‘सप्तसरोज’, ‘नवनिधि हिंदी’, ‘पे्रम पूर्णिमा’, ‘पत्तीसी’, ‘तीर्थ’, ‘द्वादशी’, ‘प्रतिभा’, ‘प्रमोद’, ‘पंचमी’, ‘चतुर्थी’, ‘पाँच फूल’, ‘कफन’, ‘समरयात्रा’, ‘मानसरोवर’ (आठ भाग), ‘प्रेम पीयूष’, ‘प्रेमकुंज’, ‘सप्त सुमन’, ‘प्रेरणा’, ‘प्रेम सरोवर’, ‘अग्नि समाधि’, ‘पे्रम राग’ (कहानी)। ‘कर्बला’, ‘संग्राम’, ‘प्रेम की वेदी’ (नाटक)। ‘महात्मा शेख सादी’ (जीवनी)। ‘कुत्ते की कहानी’, ‘जंगल की कहानियाँ’, ‘राम चर्चा’, ‘मन मोदक’ (बाल-साहित्य)। ‘तालस्तॉय की कहानियाँ’, ‘सुखदास’, ‘अहंकार’, ‘चाँदी की डिबिया’, ‘न्याय’, ‘हड़ताल’, ‘आजाद कथा’, ‘पिता का पत्र पुत्री के नाम’, ‘शबेतार’, ‘सृष्टि का आरंभ’ (अनुवाद)। प्रेमचंद वस्तुतः भारतीय स्वाधीनता आंदोलन तथा नई राष्ट्रीय चेतना के प्रतिनिधि साहित्यकार हैं। सन् 1930 में ‘विशाल भारत’ में उन्होंने स्वयं घोषित किया कि ‘‘इस समय मेरी सबसे बड़ी अभिलाषा यही है कि हम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में सफल हों।...मैं दौलत और शोहरत का इच्छुक नहीं हूँ...हाँ, यह जरूर चाहता हूँ कि दो-चार उच्च कोटि की रचनाएँ छोड़ जाऊँ, जिनका उद्देश्य स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति हो।’’ स्मृतिशेष : 8 अक्तूबर, 1936 को।
