सर्वोत्कृष्ट लघुनिबंधाचे संकलन श्री. वि. स. खांडेकर यांनी संपादित केलेल्या पंधरा लघुनिबंधांचा हा प्रतिनिधिक संग्रह आहे. या संग्रहात सर्वश्री वामन मल्हार जोशी, आचार्य काका कालेलकर, साने गुरुजी, ना. सी. फडके, कुसुमावती देशपांडे, वि. पां. दांडेकर, अनंत काणेकर, डॉ. श्री. स. भावे, र. गो. सरदेसाई, वि. द. साळगावकर, बा. भ. बोरकर, वि. ल. बर्वे, ना. मा. संत, वि. वा. शिरवाडकर आणि खुद्द खांडेकर यांच्या लघुनिबंधांचा समावेश करण्यात आला आहे. ज्या ललित गद्यलेखनाला आज आपण ‘लघुनिबंध' म्हणतो, तो खर्या अर्थाने १९३० च्या आसपास मराठी साहित्यात रूढ झाला. तेव्हापासून आतापय|त या साहित्यप्रकाराचा कसकसा विकास होत गेला, त्याचा आलेख आपणास ह्या संग्रहात सुस्पष्टपणे पाहावयास मिळतो. सर्वसामान्य लघुनिबंधात लेखकाच्या सामथ्र्याप्रमाणे काव्य, विनोद व तत्त्वज्ञान या तिन्हींचे मिश्रण होत असते. किंबहुना त्या संमिश्र मनोवृत्तीने दुधात साखर आणि केशर मिसळून जावीत, तसे या तिन्हींचे मिश्रण मनात होऊन तो लघुनिबंध - लेखनाला प्रवृत्त होतो. तथापि, या प्रातिनिधिक प्रकारातही एकमेकांजवळून वाहणारे दोन प्रवाह आहेत. पहिल्यात तंत्रनिष्ठेने येणारा डौल मोठ्या प्रमाणात दिसतो. दुसर्यात स्वभावनिष्ठतेमुळे निर्माण होणारा जिव्हाळा जसा अधिक आढळतो, तशीच कल्पना व विचार यांची स्वौरता अधिक, अंतर्मुखता किंवा चिंतनशीलता यामुळे येणार्या गांभीर्याच्या छटाही थोड्या अधिक गडद असतात. एवंगुणविशिष्ट अशा या लघुनिबंधसंग्रहाचे संपादन सुजाण आणि चोखंदळ वाचकांसाठीच करण्यात आले आहे. Khandekar) It is inclusive of shortessays by the well known authors like Acharya Kaka Kelkar, Sane Guruji, N. C. Phadke, Kusumavati Deshpande, V. P. Dandekar, Anant Kanekar, Dr. S. S. Bhave, R. G. Sirdesai, V. D. Salgaonkar, B. B. Borkar, V. L. Barve, N. M. Sant, V. V. Shirvadkar, and V. S. Khandekar. Short essay is a form of creative literature. It came into practice around 1930. This book represents a graph of the progress made by this type of literature. Generally speaking, a short essay is a mixture of poetry, humour and philosophy. Each short essay is the manifestation of an author`s imagination. When he produces them they appear in a blended form. It becomes difficult to differentiate each form of literature. All the essays reflect these qualities. Yet, this collection itself has two parallel styles. One tends to be more technical and one is more emotional. The emotional form reflects the unrestricted journey of imagination and thoughts. It also presents the darker shades of gravity.
