In Afghanistan there is a widespread practice of girls dressing as boys to play the role of a son. These children are called bacha posh: literally "girls dressed as boys." The book gives a very honest, descriptive look into the lives of Afghan
women, set among the turbulent 30 years of war in Afghanistan. The writer
tells of his struggle to follow the path he sets out for himself, despite
the objections from religious leaders in his village in the mountains.
