This is a great book that shows the trending to blending cultures. The paintings are all centered in Japanese life--everything is Japanese. The only western import is Christmas. The idea of something memorable and loving from the west, possibly after postwar Japan, is very moving on the heart. Say seems to place the ideals of the west in the East in a very hidden way, but in a way that can be appreciated by all audiences.

About the author
Allen Say was born in Yokohama, Japan, and came to the United States when he was sixteen. His many treasured books for children include Tree of Cranes, Allison, and the Caldecott Medal–winning Grandfather's Journey. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
