In The History of Mary Prince, the first black woman to escape from slavery in the British colonies and publish a record of her experiences vividly recalls her life in the West Indies, her rebellion against physical and psychological degradation, and her 1828 escape in England.

Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was an abolitionist and a women's rights activist. Harriet Jacobs (1813-97) escaped from bondage to offer firsthand accounts of slave life. A native of Bermuda, Mary Prince (1788-1833) was the first black woman to publish her autobiography in England.
