About the author

THOMAS EHRLICH is distinguished university scholar at San Francisco State University and a senior scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He was formerly president of Indiana University, provost at the University of Pennsylvania, and dean of Stanford Law School. He also served as the first director of the International Development Cooperation Agency and the first president of the Legal Services Corporation. He is chair-elect of the American Association of Higher Education and the former chair of the Campus Compact Executive Committee. In addition, he is a director of Bennett College, the Corporation for National Service, the National Center for Public Policy & Higher Education, and the Public Welfare Foundation. He is author or editor of eight books.
