Not the usual historical romance of debutantes and the ton. This is set away from society in what my mind pictured to be a grubby, early industrial town. Caroline is the most practical of her family, which is in a most precarious of situations after the death of her father. She has no dreams of romance, but concentrates on survival. Capt. Grafton lets the world think he's a ruthless, hard-hearted businessman, but it is his sense of honor and fairness which has caused the estrangement from his noble family.

I've never given a five but this was so well crafted that, (engaging characters, smooth plot, interesting, believable, useful dialogue, accurate historical descriptions), even the very few minor grammar-proofreading lapses couldn't dull the pleasure. Thoroughly enjoyed this. (Though cover art could be better.)

I read it to the end but I found the writing style dull and I couldn't 'feel' the romantic connection between the two of them. The way he switched from being abusive towards her, to being in love with her, felt sudden and too contrived.
