Then men entered his jungle, bringing with them the wanton savagery of civilised greed and lust - and bringing also the first white woman Tarzan had ever seen. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875 - 1950) was born in Chicago, the son of a Civil War veteran. A prolific writer for the early pulp magazines, he is best remembered as the creator of Tarzan and for his Martian tales featuring John Carter.
