वह थोड़ी देर रुका और फिर धीरे-धीरे बोला, ‘‘और कहाँ रखते? मेरी औरत तो बह गई थी न!’’
अचानक उद्विग्नता, आशंका और उत्सुकता साथ-साथ हावी हो उठीं—‘‘तेरी औरत? कहाँ...कैसे? तो क्या वह चिट्ठी...।’’
‘‘हाँ, भैंस बह गई थी न बाढ़ में। माँ-बाप तो बूढ़े-ठेले ठहरे, सो उसको ढूँढ़ती निकल गई थी। बाढ़ का टाइम था ही, सो लौटते-लौटते नहर का पानी बढ़ आया।’’
‘‘फिर वही...भैंस और वह, दोनों ही बाढ़ में बह गए थे।’’
‘‘हाँ, लेकिन भैंस तो बह ही गई, उससे बहुत आसरा था, अब तंगी बहुत हो गई घर में।’’
मैंने अपने को झुठलाते हुए कहा, ‘‘छोड़ो, भैंस का क्या है, दूसरी आ जाएगी, तुम्हारी औरत तो बच गई?’’
वह कुछ नहीं बोला। लेकिन मेरे अंदर से तड़ाक से एक पाशविक सच निकला, नहीं भैंस का बचना ज्यादा जरूरी था। उससे उसके बूढ़े बीमार परिवार को ज्यादा आसरा था।
अब तो शायद जीवन भर भैंस खरीदने लायक पैसे भी नहीं जुटा पाएँगे...बैजनाथ या उसके माँ-बाप।
