A colony ship careens out of control through space on the border between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. A joint rescue mission made up of both Klingon and Starfleet engineers is sent to investigate. But the S.C.E. team from the U.S.S. da Vinci and their Klingon counterparts soon find themselves with a more difficult problem than they realized. The colony isn't just out of control—it's dying.

The inhabitants of the colony ship are a pre-industrial society that has no inkling of their deadly fate. Can Federation and Klingon engineers work together to save the colony ship from total destruction?

Kevin Killiany has been the husband of Valerie for nearly a third of a century and the father of Alethea, Anson, and Daya for various shorter periods of time. In addition to his Star Trek fiction (SCE Orphans and Honor as well as three short stories in Strange New Worlds), Kevin has written for Doctor Who and several game universes, most notably BattleTech, Shadowrun, and Mechwarrior. When not writing, Kevin has been an exceptional children’s teacher, drill rig operator, high-risk intervention counselor, warehouse grunt, ESL teacher, photographer, mental health case manager, college instructor, and paperboy. Currently Kevin works in family preservation services, is an associate pastor of the Soul Saving Station, and manages to keep writing novels and short stories. Kevin and Valerie live in Wilmington, North Carolina.
