In primary hyperparathyroidism, the parathyroid glands produce an excess of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in relation to the blood calcium concentration. In secondary hyperparathyroidism, the increased PTH secretion is a response to a decrease in the blood calcium concentration. PTH-independent hypercalcaemia is associated with malignant tumours or other systemic diseases.
