Está dedicada a él [Carballido] porque la escribí gracias a su terquedad. Fue una historia que empecé a escribir diez años antes, o más, de que se publicara. Al llegar casi al final, otro amigo muy inteligente me dio una solución perfecta. Tan perfecta y verídica, tan bella incluso, que me resultó ajena. Eso provocó que abandonara la historia. Cada que veía a Carballido, él me insistía: 'termínala, cuándo la vas a publicar'. Hasta le dije que nunca la iba a publicar. Un año después, cuando tenía poco trabajo, volví sobre la historia. Me quité de la cabeza el final que mi amigo me había dado, y me puse a escribirla de nuevo, de un tirón. Le di mi propio final y sólo así pude hacer 'El hombre de los hongos'.
