About this ebook

This novel is a shocking reality of rural dancers in Purulia district of West Bengal, India. 'Nachni' means performer of 'naach' or dance but not of classical genre or even highly artistic folk. They are enslaved by their patrons called 'rasik' who exploit them physically, sexually, economically, and in all possible means. They are socially scluded as untouchables especially by the wives of the Rasik. Nachnis are usually not allowed to have children.

However, Bhabori accidentally has a daughter whom she wants to educate for a decent and better life. The story is about struggle of Bhabori for her daughter with a shocking twist and reveals the cruelty of rural Bengal, exploitation of women and many other social complications. The novel also depicts a memorable character of an empathetic teacher hailed from city who also gets trapped by the system.

All the characters as well as the society are depicted with minute detailing, and as such the novel is classic one with both micro and macro level excellence.

About the author

Sriparna Bandyopadhyay was born in 5th December 1971 in Medinipur, her maternal town and grown up in Dishergarh colliery area under Assansol subdivision of West Bengal, India. She had a good academic record with artistic and creative inclination from her very childhood. Being an MBA preceded by BSc and BEd her career could have been otherwise. In fact she started her career as a Management Trainee in a Pharmaceutical company in 1997. She also cracked many competitive exams including Lectureship in a Management College, WBCS Group-C etc., but none of them finally materialized. Enduring many turmoil in her expected career she anchored in the field of Literature in 2010 and since then her full time engagement is Creative and Factual Writing – contributing poems, fictions, book reviews and essays to various little as well as leading Bengali magazines and dailies. She has also worked as a professional Content Writer in English. She maintains 4 blogs on Literature, IT contents, Travel contents and a web magazine ‘SWAYAMSIDDHA TRAIMASIK (QUATERLY)’. Sriparna has already 22 books of poetry, fictions, essays and edited volumes in her credit and some more are in the queue.

Although her literary journey started with poetry, Sriparna is known and acknowledged for her crisp and analytical prose works and has been awarded for a number of times as a Fiction Writer, Essayist and Translator. However, she is simultaneously committed to research on gender bias, historical or socio-political issues. Her gender study is not mere criticism of society, religion or state, rather includes Genetics, Anthropology, History, Psychology, Philosophy, Criminology, Linguistics and relevant social studies directed at wellbeing of the human society as well as nature. It’s the same commitment that inspires her to write fearless columns and features. Music and travelling is her all-time favorites. She often designs the cover of her own book.
