Sarja, an Ox, telling his story. A very sad incidence marks the beginning of this story. Sarja and his mate Raja have a friend, Khilari. Sarja is more attached to her. They are separated from each other as their owner has sold them due to their ageing. The continuous drought conditions have added to the misery of the farmer, who is unable to feed his livestock. Packed in a tempo, the trio sets out on their journey to the unknown land and unknown destiny. On way, Khilari is made to disembark at some unknown place. Sarja and Raja are further taken to the slaughter house. Upon reaching there, Sarja senses the strong evil vibes of death and manages to run away. Sarja, was called as Shambhoo by his original owner. The owner sells him to another person who names him Sarja. There, Sarja meets Raja and Khilari. A special bond develops between Sarja and Khilari. After a while, the owner solds Sarja, Raja and Khilari. This is how the trio gets separated. Sarja succeeds in running away from the slaughter house. He meets Upashya, a poor fellow. Upashya, in turn colours Sarja as a 'Nandi Bail' and starts earning money. A few days after being with Upashya, Sarja meets Khilaro. Upashya understands the bonding between these two. He then takes them both to an institution which looks after aged livestock.
Sarja, touches the soul of readers with his feelings and expressions. A must read.
‘सर्जा’ हे एका बैलाचं आत्मकथन आहे. या आत्मकथनाची सुरुवात एका करुण प्रसंगाने होते. सर्जा, त्याचा जोडीदार राजा आणि त्यांची (विशेषत: सर्जाची) जोडीदारीण खिलारी यांची ताटातूट होते. त्यांच्या मालकाने दुष्काळामुळे आणि ते म्हातारे झाले म्हणून त्यांना विकलेलं असतं. त्या तिघांनाही एकाच टेम्पोमध्ये घातलेलं असतं; पण खिलारीला मध्येच उतरवलं जातं आणि सर्जा-राजाची रवानगी एका कत्तलखान्यात केली जाते. सर्जा कसाबसा तिथून निसटतो. सर्जाचं आधीचं नाव असतं शंभू; पण त्याचा मालक त्याला विकतो आणि दुसरा मालक त्याचं नाव ठेवतो...सर्जा. तिथेच त्याची राजाशी आणि खिलारीशी भेट होते. सर्जा आणि खिलारीमध्ये प्रेम निर्माण होतं. काही काळाने मालक सर्जा-राजा-खिलारी यांना विकून टाकतो. कत्तलखान्यातून पळालेल्या सर्जाची उपाश्या नावाच्या माणसाशी भेट होते. उपाश्या सर्जाला नंदीबैल करतो आणि पैसे मिळवायला लागतो. उपाश्याबरोबर भटकंती करत असताना अचानक एके दिवशी सर्जाची गाठ खिलारीशी पडते. कालांतराने सर्जा आणि खिलारीचं वय लक्षात घेऊन उपाश्या त्या दोघांना गाय-बैलांचा प्रेमाने सांभाळ करणाऱ्या एका संस्थेत नेऊन सोडतो. तर असं हे ‘सर्जा’चं भावपूर्ण आत्मकथन वाचनीय आणि मनाला भिडणारं आहे.
