Le minangkabau est la langue parlée par l'ethnie du même nom à Sumatra en Indonésie. Elle se distingue des autres ethnies d'Indonésie par la filiation matrilinéaire. Les enfants appartiennent à la famille maternelle de leur mère. L'héritage se transmet de mère en fille. Cette particularité perdure, bien que les Minangkabau soient connus comme des musulmans pratiquants. C'est la plus grande communauté appliquant encore la filiation matrilinéaire dans le monde. On estime à environ huit millions le nombre des Minangkabau, dont presque la moitié vivent en diaspora.
