Volgens de rechtse populisten van vandaag zijn `links en het nationaal-socialisme één pot nat, en was Hitler vóór alles een socialist. Hoewel dit demagogische onzin is, was er wel een zekere verwantschap en is de relatie tussen het vooroorlogse socialisme en de opkomst van fascisme en nationaal-socialisme een nader onderzoek waard. Binnen de Nederlandse sociaal-democratie ontstond het besef dat de marxistische ideologie onvoldoende oog had gehad voor andere motieven dan materieel eigenbelang. Fascisme en nazisme konden zodoende profiteren van de `onbetaalde rekeningen van het traditionele socialisme
