Alex Dacre is a young accountant who just inherited land and money from her uncle. She travels to Florence to attend his wake and to discuss her inheritance with Rinaldo Farnese. They get off to a bad start, and when Rinaldo finds out that Alex now owns part of the property that has been in his family for generations, he proposes to marry Alex to keep the family holdings intact. In return he offers to help Alex pay down her student debts. The stakes are already high, but now someone shady seems interested in the family property, too.
