With every one of her novels still in print two hundred years after their publication, Pride and Prejudice remains Jane Austen' s most popular work. The story and the telling have a timeless quality— Austen wrote about the domestic sphere, about the drama of relationships between the sexes and within the family, where women had not only significant roles but influence. Even though she lived in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, Austen was— in her life and in her work— a liberated woman. She lampooned the hypocrisy and inanity of her time with cutting wit and satire, while creating memorable characters and compelling romance that thrill us to this day. The subjects Austen wrote about will always be with us. And she wrote about them with such insight, humor, and sensitivity, that her work will fortunately always be with us, as well.
