The story follows the journey of a group of humans, led by a man named Brion Brandd, who have come to Pyrrus to study its unique flora and fauna. However, they soon find themselves stranded on the planet, with their spacecraft destroyed and no means of communication with the outside world. As they struggle to survive on this hostile planet, they encounter the pyrrans and other dangerous creatures. Brion soon realizes that their only hope of survival is to unite with the pyrrans and overthrow the corrupt ruling class that is leading the planet towards self-destruction. The novel is a thrilling adventure with elements of politics, philosophy, and social commentary.
