The first time Alfie sees the boy, he appears as if from nowhere in the school detention room - the 'padded cell'. Why does he wear black gloves all the time - even to school? Last, but definitely not least, there's the howling at night . . . Aren't werewolves . . . dangerous?

PETE JOHNSON began work as a film critic for Radio One, then became a teacher.
