In diesem Band werden die Grundlagen und Methoden der Empirischen Sprachwissenschaft anschaulich an Beispielen präsentiert. Zunächst werden verschiedene Methoden der Datenerhebung (Experiment, Befragung, Beobachtung), anschließend verschiedene Verschriftungssysteme verbaler Daten vorgestellt. Den Hauptteil bildet die Darstellung "quantitativer" und "qualitativer" Analyseverfahren. Bei der Behandlung "quantitativer" Verfahren wird auf die deskriptive und induktive Statistik eingegangen, bei der Behandlung "qualitativer" Verfahren auf die Inhaltsanalyse, auf Diskurs- sowie auf ethnographische Analysen.
