About the author

Samuel Richardson (1689 – 1761) was an English writer and publisher known for his epistolary novels: Pamela: Or, Virtue Rewarded, Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady, and The History of Sir Charles Grandison. Richardson was born in Derbyshire in 1689 and was educated a grammar school in London. Despite lacking formal education, he became a master printer and later a novelist. Pamela was a best-selling yet controversial novel of its time. Richardson died in 1761.
