Optoelectronic Line Transmission: An Introduction to Fibre Optics provides a basic introduction as well as a background reference manual to fiber optic transmission. Topics covered range from fibers and cables to transmitters and receivers, along with waveguides, couplers, connectors, and repeaters. Optoelectronic test techniques are also described. Comprised of nine chapters, this book begins with a historical background on optoelectronic line transmission as well as a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of optical fibers and optoelectronic signaling; practical applications of optoelectronics; and future prospects for optoelectronics. Subsequent chapters focus on the theoretical aspects of fiber optics; fibers and cables used in optical transmission; transmitters and receivers; and waveguides, couplers, connectors, and repeaters. Communication systems and the techniques used in optoelectronic testing are also considered. This monograph is intended for practicing electronic and telecommunications engineers, technicians, and students who would like to be aware of the basic fundamentals and capabilities of fiber optics.
