Op de dag dat hij te horen heeft gekregen dat hij longkanker heeft, wordt maffiaknecht Roy Cady er door zijn baas opuit gestuurd om een van diens zakenpartners mores te leren. Wanneer hij het huis binnenkomt, blijkt de opdracht een valstrik waaraan Roy ternauwernood ontsnapt. Hij slaat op de vlucht met Rocky, een jong hoertje dat niet helemaal toevallig ook in het huis aanwezig was. Roy wil haar zo snel mogelijk dumpen, maar omdat hij toch niets meer te verliezen heeft, besluit hij haar en haar kleine zusje bij zich te houden. Uiteindelijk komen ze terecht in het stadje Galveston, waaraan Roy goede, maar misplaatste herinneringen heeft. Ondanks zichzelf raakt hij steeds meer gehecht aan Rocky. Ze bouwen langzaam maar zeker een band op totdat...
