La storia della prima brigata SS, un reparto sicuramente poco conosciuto e soprattutto poco trattato dalla storiografia ufficiale, pur essendo una formazione che si guadagnò sul campo, almeno nella fase finale della sua storia militare, una buona reputazione, come dimostrato dalle numerose decorazioni concesse ai suoi membri, tra Croci di Cavaliere e Croci Tedesche in Oro. Impiegati inizialmente nelle retrovie del fronte dell'Est, i reparti della Brigata SS furono coinvolti principalmente contro le bande partigiane, nella cosiddetta 'sporca guerra', una lotta senza quartiere e senza esclusione di colpi, che chiamò in causa forze di sicurezza, milizie locali, i famigerati'Einsatzgruppen', ma anche vari reparti della Waffen SS, e che fu caratterizzata da crimini efferati contro la popolazione civile.
