About this ebook

Mary Aileen Diez-Bacalso is a human rights activist and journalist based in Manila and contributes columns to international publications, mostly highlighting rights issues in Asia. Currently, she is president of the International Coalition Against Enforced Disappearances (ICAED).

The e-book In Solidarity consists of her essays published by UCA News. Most focus on one of the main issues facing Asian countries today: forced disappearance.

Deteriorating democratic values and freedoms in Asian nations have led to the disappearance of rights activists and protesters. Oppressive regimes try to eradicate any voices that criticize their governance. They find it easier to silence protesters than to improve their policies.

Despite such struggles, people fight to restore justice by strongly opposing authoritarian governments as relatives and rights groups seek to find the whereabouts of disappeared activists.
